Tourist Map Of Athens

Athens is one of the true great ancient cities of the world to visit (we’ve been 3 times and counting!) For those of you into your Greek history there are a number of ancient monuments to see, of course top amongst these is the Parthenon at the Acropolis. If you are going to visit it’s best to go earlier in the day before the peak times for organised tours, it can get very chaotic and even getting a decent picture can be difficult. Also close by is the recently opened Acropolis Museum (it’s only 5 minutes down the hill). It’ll take you a couple of hours to walk around this properly and it can give a very welcome break from the heat of the Greek summer sun.

Another of the must see attractions when visiting Athens is the changing of the guard in Syntagmatos Square. This happens on the hour every hour at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It’s actually very easy to get around Athens by Metro and there is a station in the sqaure that sees you just 2 minutes walk from the changing of the guard. It’s also only a 5 minute ride to the Acropolis if you are wanting to explore freestyle.

Of course Athens has a huge number of things to see and do, many of which are marked out on the tourist map above. In general it feels like a safe, welcoming city and we’ve never had any problems getting around on our own.
